review 1: A book that, for me, was hard to put down. Two young kids are accused of a murder they did not commit and are sent to jail for the crime. When they get out, they are determined to find the real killer. The book is not only a whodunit, but deals with dysfunctional families, bullying, rebellious teens, drugs and alcohol, as well as what it is like to be in jail. To me, it was very plausible. The only part I thought was a stretch was when the two who were convicted decided to find out who was the real killer and did their own investigating. O.J. Simpson aside, I don't think people do that. I could identify with many parts of the story and, even though it was called a psychological thriller, for me it was even a tear-jerker at times.
review 2: I stopped several tim
... morees to see if this was a Young Adult novel that I was reading by accident. It was just so ... juvenile. "Toni" leaves no thought left unvoiced, which means the reader need do no work whatsoever to understand anything about her or any of the people she's describing. This annoying habit of leaving nothing for the reader to infer or imagine makes Toni simultaneously one of the most insightful and one of the stupidest protagonists around. The story has all the nuance and subtlety of an After School Special combined with a Harlequin Romance. Really disappointing. less
