Zom-B
review 1: The Zom-B series by Darren Shan has been a blessing to anyone that has followed his career throughout the years. Now, with Zom-B Gladiator, readers have had their questions answered from things that weren't fully answered or explored in the previous novel, Zom-B Baby. The series deals with a teenaged school girl, Becky Smith, that has been brought up in a dysfunctional family setting where her father is a well known racist. But when Zombies start attacking and killing humans, Becky Smith, now known as B, is turned into a Revitalised, a zombie that can think, talk, learn, fight, like a normal human, but they still have to be careful around humans, as their vicious claw-like, fingernails can impale and infect survivors. B has been suffering from nightmares, nightmares that i... morenvolve daemonic, sinister zombie babies; she is still trying to work out her purpose in life, now she fights with the Angels, a team of Revitalised zombies that trained by Dr Oystein to help and protect any surviving humans that are in need or shelter. But B isolates herself, scared of losing those that have come to mean something to her life, after losing so many when the outbreak had previously taken so many from her. In a world that is over-run by vicious zombies and a mad mutant clown that is a sworn enemy of B, she will have to make up her mind whether to open up her heart and accept what she has, entrust those that fight alongside her, or risk losing everything that denies her. Zom-B Gladiator is a deliciously gory, action thrilled adventure that will thrill young readers and new of Darren Shan's enticing storytelling.
review 2: In Gladiator, B is finding herself drifting further apart from her group of friends and roommates in the Angels. She has come to the conclusion that friends should stay far away from her as they could so she wouldn't be hurt or get them hurt. After her run in with the zombie baby she feels that anything could happen and having people close to you can become hazardous. And even though her fellow Angels are trying, they are trying in vain. B stays on her own.During a routine check for survivors, B and her group of friends find a mother and son. One of the revitalises goes in search of a toy for the little boy to show them that they can trust the Angels and will be safe in City Hall. B goes with him and while waiting outside the dilapidated Hamleys toy store, she is kidnapped by the zombie hunter Barnes. Bound and gagged, B is tossed into the back of a van and Barnes brings her to a cruise ship sitting at the dock. Here B meets the Board. This group of six self appointed government consider themselves well off and almost living in this fantasy of ancient roman times. The Board had heard about a talking zombie and requested that Barnes brought it to them to fight against other revived zombies. At first B refuses, considering to kill them all when the real side of one of their members is revealed and B encounters somebody worse than a zombie. She encounters Dan-Dan.Dan-Dan was a serial killer before the outbreak but worse than that he was a paedophile. He threatens to kill two children as well as the other twelve he has held hostage on board if B doesn't fight. She agrees but only if she sees the children every day to make sure Dan-Dan doesn't have any ideas. The Board agrees and B commences her duties as a Gladiator. But all the constant fighting and injuries is taking their toll on B and she starts to think how long she could possibly spend doing this and how much time left she can give the children on board.Just as she feels herself coming to the end of her time on the cruise ship, she is miraculously saved by her friends in the Angels along with Dr. Oystein. They were able to rescue the children and take over the cruise ship. Although for B, Dan-Dan escaped and she can now only count the seconds until she finally has her day with the serial killer. What I liked about this book is we have the basic hero dilemma, 'I can't let people get too close to me because they might get hurt.' And this can be the most crippling thing that any protagonist can encounter as they are just getting comfortable in their surroundings. But for B it is that classic dilemma but considering what she grew up with and how she was, the group of Angels and everyone in City Hall are probably the first genuine people she has encountered and that can be a frightening thing in a world of nothing but zombies. This part of the book which marks our halfway point of the series shows us that it is okay to rely on people, that people will care about you whether you give them that choice or not. And I think as people get older they can relate to coming to that cross roads of picking their friends in their lives and B, while being extremely brave by doing what she thought right by those children, should have trusted and relied on her friends to be there for her.Now that we are halfway through the series, I think that we've had an interesting first six books that have gone through a whole array of emotions and situations that unfortunately people live with a struggle with on an everyday basis and we're not even living in a zombie apocalypse. So what can we expect from the next six?Well hopefully we get to find out about Mr. Dowling, how did he come to have such rule over zombies? Where did the mutants come from? Why do they serve him?Plus we have the baby from book five, where did the baby come from? Is it connected to Mr. Dowling? How can something from B's nightmares be there in real life.As always Darren likes to leave his readers with more questions than answers but I have a feeling that those answers are ones that we won't be prepared for. less
