review 1: It's hard not to enjoy this series, especially this title that brings readers up to speed and lets them know what they've been missing. Young readers will laugh at the toilet bowl, underwear, and toenail humor and older readers--yes, teachers with a sense of humor--will smile and maybe even chortle at lines such as these: The Turbo Toilet 2000 "swiveled his massive bowl around quickly" (p. 34) or one referring to the toilet as a "loathsome lavatory" (p. 42). The usual characters are here with George and Harold in an uneasy alliance with Melvin Sneedly. Fans of the series will not be disappointed to find that the book contains a Flip-o-Rama featuring a four-year-old and his grandmother. It even explores the dark side of being a hero. Even the chapter titles are amusing. Thi... mores is all such fun, fun, fun, and while Captain Underpants might not be my go-to title, I always enjoy romping through these books. Try this one--you'll never look at underwear in quite the same way again.
review 2: ARC/Young Adult Time Travel: When my younger son was about nine, his older brother got him Captain Underpants book 1 since I wouldn't let my younger son have video games. It was some kind of revenge, I believe. Even though I am a reader and don't judge people's choices in books, I felt this was too much for my younger son's then young mind. After that, we were going to used book stores and libraries to find the rest of the books. When Book 8 or so came out, we were pre-ordering and getting rubber bands to snap on our wrists. The Captain is contagious; and not in an Ebola way. So now my sons are grown and I'm a grandmother to Stormaggeon. What better way to get back at my older son than get a Captain Underpants book for his son. Granted, he is young, but will sit while being read too. Besides, Storm is potty-training. Well, this is how I spent my extra "fall back" hour this year. I remember some about the books. The Captain is an alter-ego for the principal and he only thinks his stints as the captain are a dream. Even though this is book 11, the first pages explain the saga so far. It is done in comic strip fashion, which is okay....but the author chooses to do it with spelling errors. Kids have enough problems with advertising agencies flooding our children with misspelling words like: Lite, site, Xtreme, that I took off a star. While I understand why he does it, I would rather he didn't. While he uses the correct "their" (some adults I know get it wrong), he spells it "Thier". The book goes on in proper English and has the usual flip pages. It's cute all the way through and I liked the Melvin part the best. One thing I noticed different from the old books is that the pages are heavy matte pages. I didn't like the shine from my lamp and had to read it in a well lit room. I could only think about a child trying to get in a good position while trying sneak a read at night. The author's bio at the end is heartwarming. My younger son made "sounds" in class as he thought about a story in his head; usually Power Rangers. I had to tell his teachers that those sounds would eventually make him a millionaire. Those sounds he made as a child became a love for the trumpet and he's in college with a scholarship. So I guess the Captain Underpants books worked. less
