review 1: I enjoyed the story but found it a little heavy-handed on the life lessons. All of the characters seemed to be having too-well articulated moments that didn't feel genuine. I quite liked Riley and Quinn, but didn't feel very connected to them. I didn't understand their motivations although I found both of them nice enough to want them to be happy together. Nothing here will stand out from the genre, but it's a nice enough way to spend the afternoon. Even though the dog getting a paragraph from his own p.o.v. just about gave me sugar shock (sorry, the sugar puns are almost irresistible.)I am on the fence about Charlotte and Franco, though. Superficially, it seems like the author is trying to be inclusive with an Indian woman and a gay dude, but neither of them are very fle... moreshed-out and so far have only really popped up as sounding boards for the main protagonist. They exist almost entirely in the background and frankly, I'd rather see them get their own full stories, rather than have new characters introduced. I'll reserve judgement until I read the next book, but I'm not really loving that aspect.
review 2: A solid 3 stars, here's why:Pros:I really liked the way Riley and Quinn were written. Much more so than Lani and Baxter. Riley and Quinn's characters felt more developed & were written more strongly. Brutus was very extremely enjoyable. Alma, Franco & Char provided several funny moments.Cons:Again, a lot of filler... 80% of the book is mundane day-to-day droll and constant chatter between characters. Most of the book seems to include one or more secondary character(s) in the scene. Very few "alone time" scenes for Riley & Quinn. Lead characters do not share a first kiss until 60% through the book & naked togetherness at 80% through. Slow paced, but again... better than the first book. less
