review 1: Three and half stars. A surprisingly low key read. The relationship between Ethan and Julia was amusing with little drama. Julia's reason for being closed off to relationships was lame. Only in romance novels are people permanently scarred by their first brief youthful relationship. The action was almost non-existent, with most of it left to the big finale. There is a bit about D and Noelle and a some set up for the next book. Liam and Sullivan's relationship was teased again and I'm so hoping they get their own book. (I'm betting they like to share women.) While most of the cast makes a cameo appearance, compared to the other books there was surprisingly little attention paid to them. The book held my attention and was a quick easy read. However it didn't pack the emotion... moreal punch of earlier books.
review 2: Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Midnight Pursuits begins with a mystery that hooks you and then turns into an action-packed story about vengeance.Opening Sentence: Nothing beat a cup of steaming-hot coffee in the dead of winter, at least in Ethan Hayes’s humble opinion. The Review:Midnight Pursuits is the fourth title in the Killer Instinct series. The story starts off with Ethan Hayes taking a relaxing vacation in Vermont (at Trevor and Isabel’s place), mainly contemplating his future when he gets a shocking phone call from Juliet Mason. Juliet is badly hurt and needs Isabel’s help but Isabel has just conveniently left on her honeymoon with Trevor and without her cell phone. Ethan jokingly answers the cell phone not realizing the distressing situation on the other end.Ethan who is never one to leave a lady in distress or even a teammate immediately leaves for Belarus. He is thrust into a vengeance plot that includes a high ranking government official and an anti-government militia group. What begins as a two person operation will eventually grow to include other members of the team after they discover the depths a person will go to assassinate family members of government officials in order to teach them a lesson. Juliet wants to ruin his plans with her own plan of revenge. The beginning of Midnight Pursuits is shrouded in mystery before going back and telling Juliet’s story of how she got into her predicament. I really enjoyed this tactic because it hooked me in and I really wanted to know what happened to Juliet. After that the mystery part of the storyline disappeared and turned into an action/covert ops story.Midnight Pursuits also has a minor storyline that follows Noelle, Jim Morgan, and D. This is a huge set up for the next book, Midnight Action, which is Jim and Noelle’s story. Their relationship has been teased since book one and I am absolutely looking forward to finding out what happened to them in the past.Ethan is the rookie of the team and is often teased because of his age. He is also the reliable one and will put himself in the way of harm for any team member. He is the sweetie pie of the team but he also has a dark and almost voyeuristic side. He also knows when to step back and let Juliet lead which is a huge turn on for Juliet.Juliet is quite the loner. She claims to be selfish and only looks after herself. We do learn that while she enjoys her incredible freedom that her job enables her, she really isn’t as selfish as she thinks. She will commit the ultimate act of selflessness that really changes her character.Midnight Pursuits is my favorite of the series so far. I felt like the story tried to stick with Ethan and Juliet as much as possible. The story did skip to other points of views but kept them short and sweet and in context of the storyline that was going on. Also, you don’t have to have read the rest of the series in order to pick up this book. I think this one could definitely be read as a standalone.Overall, I was hooked into this story from the beginning and I was fairly surprised by how it played out. If you are a fan of the military op type books than I would definitely recommend giving this series a try.Notable Scene:“Fine. Let’s find those people and warn them.”He smiled in the darkness.“I guess finding them could work to my advantage,” she added, as if trying to rationalize the plan to herself. “If Orlov wants them dead, then clearly they’re important to him. Maybe I can use them as leverage, dangle them in front of Orlov in order to get to the bastard.”He had to laugh. “I see. So as long as there’s something in it for you, then you’re totally on board. You can’t just do it out of the goodness of your heart, huh?”“What heart?”“You don’t have to keep pretending with me. You can drop the heartless-bitch act, you know. It’s okay to care about other people.”“But I don’t care,” she answered flatly. “I still don’t give a shit about those strangers. But Henry would have cared. He would have gone out of his way to protect them from Orlov.”“See, you do care. About your brother, at least.”She grumbled in irritation. “Stop trying to find the good in me. Truth is, I am a heartless bitch. Self-preservation is the only thing that matters to me.”“If that were true, you wouldn’t have dropped everything to race to your brother’s bedside. And you wouldn’t be risking your own life now to avenge him.”She let out a sigh. “Make no mistake, rookie—if it had ever come down to protecting Henry or protecting myself, I would’ve chosen me.”Ethan held his tongue. If she wanted him to think she was a cold, emotionless bitch, then fine. But he didn’t believe it for a second.FTC Advisory: Signet/Penguin provided me with a copy of Midnight Pursuits.
