review 1: I was captivated by the premise. This account has something that all of the other fictional accounts of the lastdays of the Romanovs lack, and that is a proper Russian dose of pathos. It is so well done that I am able to buy into the more far-fetched aspects of the story, especially the Irish connection. It is an exciting mystery, but it is also tragic,not unlike the incredible Doctor Zhivago. It is a much more satisfying story than the ones that cast the Archduchess Anastasia as a charwoman. The quality of the writing is above the norm, but it is the story itself that earns a strong four star rating. Meade offers a strong competitor for others like Ken Follett who write this kind of story. The manner in which the main story is framed in the contemporary adventure of... more a female archeologist with Russian links is done especially well here. I immediately upon finishing downloaded The Second Messiah, but for me, this is the far better of the two.
review 2: Almost a 5! I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and provided insights into what MIGHT have happened to the Romanov family - especially Anastasia. It wasn't overly well written (thus a 4 instead of a 5) - but it wasn't bad either, especially for a spy/thriller. There were a lot of characters so the X-Ray function on my kindle was very helpful. The main female character was a little unbelievable in the second half of the book when she seemed to completely switch to a new personality. Overall though, a definite recommendation. less
