review 1: Darius, a poor second son, sells himself to "ladies" of certain inclinations in order help keep his small estate going. When he is approached by an elderly man hoping to procure a pregnancy for his young wife, Darius is at first appalled but then realizes what this could mean financially for his estate. He agrees. He never expects to fall in love with Lady Vivien or to consider William, the elderly husband, as his friend. There were numerous things I liked about this book. I believed Vivien, Darius, and William's situation, and Burrowes made me sympathize with their solution - something I wasn't sure about going in. Although underdeveloped, I also enjoyed the various relationships between all the secondary characters. Yet, for as much as I liked, there were many, many thin... moregs I didn't. The bad guys weren't really that bad - or at least the solutions to handle them happened in about 2 paragraphs each - making the tensions caused by them eye rolling. The dialog was frequently repetitive with a several romance cliches. Furthermore, despite this being the 1st book of the series, I couldn't help but think I should have read several of the other books first. There were several plot points mentioned that I'm assuming will be covered in other books, but their inclusion in this one just left me confused. To my memory, this is the first book by Burrowes I've read. It won't be the last. Despite my "just OK" rating, there was enough here to peak my curiosity in the rest of this series. Given this one has the lowest overall rating of the series, I'm hopeful for upcoming books.
review 2: Darius Lindsey is not your average regency hero. He sells himself to rich, bored, (en)titled women to make ends meet caring for his family. He is instantly likeable, sympathetic and desperate. His latest offer is ever so tempting as it will pay his debts, but will require more than he has been willing to give. Vivian is in a marriage of convenience, she was harder to warm up to, but as they get to know each other, I came to like her very much. I loved the humor, emotion, and redemption of this book. I was riveted to the pages wondering how their HEA would come about. Looking forward to book two in the Lonely Lords series.. less
