review 1: This was an irritating book to read solely because of the multiple characters. I didn't know there relations and their sporadic appearances seem random at best. I took it as a sign of poor writing. I was irritated at the random characters with no introductions or their significance. There were way too many and unnecessary sub romance plots that I couldn't care about. I think it is because the characters weren't really fleshed out and it came across as a novel with fill in the blank elements. Anyways, the story revolves around the poor earl who is tasked with saving his scottish keep. He is in talks with a rich heiress. However, he finds himself more attracted to her cousin, whose inheritance had been stolen by her uncle. The bride herself is reluctant to marry because she ... moregrew up in an abusive environment that is held together by an arranged marriage. She falls in love with the hero's brother who similarly falls for her. Then there is a random widow who offered to pay a man for his body. I wish there random appearances made sense but ultimately it was just irritating. Anyways, the uncle stole the title and voided the heroine's father's will. He intercepted letters, broke marriage arrangements, plotted to have her killed, arranged for his daughter's marriage, was foiled, and attempted to kill the heroine again. This book just does not make sense. Why after all these years did he deign to kill her? Why hadn't he done so earlier if she was such a threat? Why is she there with them? What is the widow ultimate purpose? Why is she even there at all? I think the most irritating part about the whole thing is the weak premise. When Ian ultimately decided that he couldn't marry Genie, they all agreed that it wasn't really necessary. This book is so exasperating. What was the whole book for then? This book was somber all around, which corresponds to the lifelessness of the book.
review 2: Four romances for the price of one. I love how the couples shoved together in the beginning of the story aren't necessarily the ones that end up together in the end. The story also puts forth one of the worse parts of marriages at the time, arranged matches solely for the purpose of wealth or title and how little worth some women had to their families. Burrowes did a great job letting the reader get to know all the characters, and each of the four romances had solid bones and affection to them. I would read more from this author. less
