The Good Neighbors
review 1: I picked up this series on a whim while at the library this week. I hadn't read anything about the series prior to that but was intrigued by the possibility of a good faerie story.Let's start with what I enjoyed about these books: the inclusion of many different faerie folk and an art style that lent itself well to depicting such creatures.Other than this, the story was pretty predictable. I don't think anyone will be surprised by the ending. Additionally, the story was very choppy; transitions in both the text and the art were poorly done or completely lacking, which resulted in quite a few checks to make sure that I didn't miss a few pages.Overall, it's a faerie story that is true to form with some nice art to look at, but it falls short of being anything truly innovated... more or outstanding.
review 2: In the second of three books in Holly Black & Ted Naifeh's 'The Good Neighbors' series, Rue faces the aftermath of her discoveries and is plunged deeper into all that is faerie that has been invading her world. With her boyfriend avoiding her, a friend disappeared into the woods, and her mother's shadow luring Rue into the midst of her grandfather's faerie gathering, Rue is put into the position to make decisions that effect not only her, but her entire town. Being half human and half faerie, Rue must make the decision of which part of her matters most - that which links her to her family history, or that of the world she knows and the friends she loves.-Holly Black and Ted Naifeh don't disappoint in this addition to 'The Good Neighbors.' With even more stunning artwork, and the continued story to match it - Kith does it's job of drawing out the mystery and suspense of the first book to keep the reader enthralled and wanting more. These books are a quick, easy, and enjoyable read. I cannot say enough how outstanding Naifeh's artwork is in this series. Again, I only wished that the inner pages were as colorful as the gorgeous cover art. In flow with this dark and edged design, Black's story takes the reader into Rue's life and soul. While I was unsure of the graphic novel approach compared to Black's other Fae works in the first book, this book had me completely convinced of the brilliance. This book introduces us in more detail to the other characters in Rue's life. I was particularly pleased to get those glimpses of Rue's friends as well as that look into the faerie world. Tam's story was especially striking, and the few scenes that we get to see him in really rounded him out as a character. Even Rue's mother is given that extra touch of personality (especially considering that we've never technically met her before).Overall, I thought that this was a fantastic addition to the series - not a standalone novel, but a great support to the first book. I would definitely recommend this to readers of Holly Black, or anybody who wants to read a darker faerie novel without quite the length of typical novels. less
