review 1: The Last Girl is the 3rd book in the Maeve Kerrigan mystery series. Unlike the initial books (The Burning and The Reckoning), this story does not stand alone. You need to be familiar with the back story to understand a threat to the protagonist and references to an ongoing investigation. (In fact, a plot point in this book sets up the next sequel in the series.) Casey's books are well plotted and the characters are interesting.
review 2: This is a good series. The heroine is smart and gutsy...mostly. She really needs to toughen up when dealing w/ her gross, sexist, annoying partner who does happen to outrank her and doesn't let her forget it. Yes, he does seem to have a little depth and possibly even a genuinely decent thought ever so often, but it's so out
... moreweighed by the over-bearing and obscene innuendo he frequently spews, it almost doesn't count. And btw, what's with the tired formula that continually has over-burdened, harassed, bright young female detectives constantly surrounded by incompetent or not quite on the level superiors, abusive, jealous, and lazy or dangerous colleagues, and inevitably boy friend issues to boot. (This boy friend is delicious and really loves Maeve...I actually think I like him as much if not more than her). Oh, and did I forget to mention she (Maeve) has a stalker who loves her too, and creeps from book to book and case to case w/ her? He's already served jail time for this, but he's nothing if not determined. Lots of loose ends at the end of this (the 3rd in the series) book, but the murders get solved and Maeve and her Rob are still together, so the stalker will have to wait until the next book to strike...and it looks like he will. less
