Lucas Davenport
review 1: This is #19 in the Lucas Davenport Prey Series. Every series has its peaks and valleys a reader must work through and any one of quality usually gets back on track. I have not been too keen on the last two editions of the Prey series but I am certainly back with this one. A former adversary from a much earlier book reappears to cause Lucas some problems. Randy Whitcomb, a paraplegic in a wheelchair and a violent nasty criminal, has just been released from a medium security prison. He and Lucas have a violent history and Randy blames Lucas for the loss of his legs. Randy is determined to seek revenge and determines that the best way to accomplish this is through Davenport’s teenage daughter Letty. Meanwhile, the Twin Cities is host to the Republican Convention, an... more event the governor is hoping will enhance the reputation as well as the financial coffers of the city. Lucas has not embraced the decision and is concerned the city is not ready, convinced they have neither the resources nor the expertise to handle the complex and time consuming security required. John McCain is to be nominated for the Presidency and Sarah Palin who has just arrived on the scene will be put forward as the Vice Presidential candidate. Resources are coming in from other states but coordinating them all will be a difficult job. If something terrible happens, and the potential is always present, there will be hell to pay. Meanwhile a very accomplished team of thieves is looking at this event as an opportunity to make a killing in jewelry and cash. They have good intelligence, are expert planners and always hit at a moment when they have the least chance of being caught. If they work it right and are careful, they may be able to set themselves up for life. There is always a lot of money floating around at these political conventions, much of it in cash and unaccounted for, expense money for all those helping out at the various events. All these volunteers need to be fed and taxied to various locations, given cash to pay for the materials to create and post signs, and helped with doing whatever needs to be done. Cash greases those greedy palms and so it must be easily available. Letty, Davenport’s ward, has been living with Lucas, Weather and Sam but has not had any prominent role in the series since she arrived in the family. Readers simply know that Lucas and Weather have plans to adopt her and that the judicial process is progressing. But in this edition, Letty appears prominently and it is nice to see her back. She has had a difficult life, but she is street smart, independent and gutsy. She has been working as an unpaid intern at Channel Three News, mentored by Jennifer Carey, Davenport’s ex-lover and the mother of his daughter. Jennifer feels Letty has a good eye and ear for a news story and has been giving her increasing responsibility. Now with the convention there are more opportunities for her to learn and hone her skills. Letty has taken to this role with enthusiasm and is well liked by the reporters and producers who often benefit from her tips. Lucas must once more wrestle with an ethical and political problem and it is interesting to see how he resolves it. He has no trouble with the legitimate assignments that have a political component, but he hates and avoids the purely political assignments. The fact he is independently wealthy allows him to say no if he wants to, he is not at the mercy of his job for a pay cheque, and this sometimes creates as much problem for his bosses as it does for him.Enjoyed the conclusion in this one; a fun ride.
review 2: Good story with memorable characters especially adopted daughter ?????. Still struggling a bit with mechanics of one click digital and that gets in the way of the story, but enjoyable none the less. I choose these audiobooks because they are available from the library easily, not because I have a burning desire to read them. However I have read books only these authors before and know I enjoy them. less
