Iron Man (Marvel NOW!)
review 1: Iron Man has, outside the movies, never been a favorite of mine. For reasons I can't explain, I've never really gotten much out of the character. Onscreen, Robert Downey Jr. has turned Tony Stark into a charming wiseguy who seems almost too lazy to really get much done while also effortlessly getting more done in a few minutes that most people get done all day. Furthermore, the Marvel NOW revamps have been largely entertaining with not-quite-new looks at the various Avengers, Thor, the Hulk, and Hawkeye, among others. Could this finally be what gets me into Iron Man?In a word, no. I read through the first three trades for the new series, and while I didn't hate anything, I was mostly left feeling "meh". Iron Man works for me as an Avenger, but not on his own. This o... morepening arc dealt with Tony trying to reign in some rogue use of Extremis technology (again, almost certainly connecting to Iron Man 3 on the big screen). Each chapter has Tony in different armor going against different uses for the stuff. It doesn't add up to much of a whole, and really, I wasn't sure why he flew off into space at the end of the thing. Artwork by notorious tracer Greg Land didn't help much.
review 2: "I am an Iron Man fan for quite sometime now and the best books for me was Extremis by Warren Ellis and Matt Fraction's run on the Invincible Iron Man (volumes 1 to 6 and 9 to 11 anyway). In this new approach by Gillen, he intends to bring Tony Stark / Iron Man into a totally new dimension on storytelling. Ideal but in this book...lacking. It feels like reading old Iron Man stories, there's no new sci-fi tricks, no technopath-extremis abilities being shown by Stark and no challenging foes to bring readers at the edge. At the end, it felt like Tony got bored here on Earth and decides to go to space for a change." less

I've found that this run has got off to a bit of a slow start. It's getting better though.
