review 1: I began reading Harrison's books while I was ill and the most irritating thing about her protagonist was her inability to listen, learn, and care for herself. I was incredibly pleased and surprised to find Rachel Morgan grow with her experiences book by book until she became fully actualized and capable. Harrison allows the reader to follow the development of a character from a rash and impatient child into a powerful, intelligent, and deep woman.
review 2: Book 12 in this series & thankfully only one more until it's done. It's been interesting and has clearly never managed to become so horrible that I simply couldn't read any more (I'm looking at YOU, Hamilton & your Anita Blake series). I've enjoyed the twists Harrison has added to her story, but I think th... moreey would have benefited from a heavy-handed editor.Someone has put all the master vampires to sleep. While initially that might seem to be a good thing, chaos soon breaks out as the living vampires no longer have anyone to keep them in check. There werewolf clans rise up to gain power while the police forces (normal & supernatural) scramble to deal with the violence erupting all over. Coinciding with this are pulses of magic from the ley lines, causing additional mayhem & deaths as regular spells & charms overload when cast instead of doing simple tasks (instead of cleaning the fat from a kitchen stove, all the fat in the human body is removed). It appears that someone is attempting to harvest the power of the elven Goddess & Rachel must save the world before events spread outside of Cincinnati & across the nation. less
