review 1: I think this may be the best novel I've read so far this year. I was completely absorbed by the drama of Galileo's life and the struggle for freedom to carry out scientific explorations in an age when the church thought the whole world had already been explained. In addition, the author throws in some lessons in physics and astronomy, speculation about the future of humanity and some interesting ideas about why we may sometimes feel emotions that don't appear to be our own.
review 2: a rather strange tale. certainly a very strange way to tell Galileo's story. but that's always the case when time travel is involved. although that aspect is a bit more satisfying here given the crack Robinson takes at maths & theory that are way over my head. I was particularly in
... moretrigued by an idea he floats that we're much better off because of the opposition of Religion to Science and that we would have been much worse off if Religion had agreed with Science and co-opted it. less

OMG. too long! interesting premise and could have been a good book, but at half the length.

Weird. A mess. Okay, I don't get it. I'm a fan of KSR, but this was a big miss for me.
