review 1: After reading The Magpie Lord, I was somewhat excited to explore the series some more and see how the characters and the author developed. I regret to say I did so because now I have decided to leave the story, its characters, and author behind.Pros:~ Charles cleaned up some of the language which was cluttering some scenes and making the action difficult to follow. It's much better written than the first book.~ The magic remained somewhat interesting~Meeting characters who in the previous book who were only brought up in passing~More intimacy to speak on behalf of in this "romantic" paranormal novelCons:~Stephen being the most powerful character in terms of skill, but being an insufferable weakling. The last scene had him whining about the climax of the plot. Previously I ... morefound him damaged but still likeable, now I just find him to be insufferable and cringed at the moments where we are supposed to empathize with him. I cannot suffer through another book with him going: "Oh God, Lucien, I was so scared." It's one thing to express fear of losing a partner or being afraid of something, but jeez, being so overwrought about it.~Also in regards to Stephen, reviewers of The Magpie Lord were right that Stephen in sex is written like a stereotypical, cliched female protagonist. The submissiveness has crossed a line. There is no consistent indication that they are in a dom-sub relationship, until they get to the bedroom and Stephen is just there to fulfill Lucien's desires. It's a turn-off to me, and while not all may share my opinion, he's just a hole for Lucien to put his prick into. Even when Lucien tells him to take control in the intimacy, Stephen just can't, he has to be Lucien's willing little toy. He's become annoying. He was previously my favorite character and to watch him just be so sniveling in this book outside of his job is just unbecoming.~Charles also pushed Lucien to the extreme, he's just extremely uncouth and thinks to fast with his bravado. As a writer, I understand making Stephen and Lucien foils to some degree, but Charles has pushed both characters to caricatured extremes that are dichotomous and ultimately annoying by the end of the book.~Though better written in language, the plot of this story was not nearly as encapsulating as The Magpie Lord. The tension was absent, the blackmailer as an initial antagonist was a yawn, and even the ultimate villain was just a bore. I have a mouse/rat phobia, and this story evoked no sense of dread in me so I can't imagine how terror-less it must've been for readers without that phobia. It just seemed all for naught. I knew that they would all be okay, but I should've at least been able to suspend my disbelief and be concerned for what would happen in between the beginning and the end. It showed promise in the beginning but by about midway, I was just reading it to see what would happen, only to be left mostly disinterested and cringing at the final scene and dialogue between the characters.
review 2: This was a fun read. And while this sounds like nothing, I mean it. Fun to read. I wasn't all too sure about book 1 because I couldn't make up my mind whether or not to like Lucien - but I liked Stephen, a lot, and thought they might make an interesting pairing in the long run. And here is book 2, and what a character development. We learn a lot more about Stephen's job and responsibilities and about Lucien's future plans, too, and Merrick gives quite an earful to Lucien (what an interesting side character Merrick is, I'd love to read more about him, too). When Lucien finally admits, both to himself and to Stephen, that he has come to care very deeply for his 'little witch', wow, that was the sweetest declaration of love I've read in a long time.So yeah, I'm hooked and can't wait to read more :-)It's a four star review only because I think there's room for more, and not because I find it lacking. less
