review 1: "There was a time when the woods near Duva ate girls."This little novella is a wonderfully crafted folk story that takes place in Ravka. It's slightly Hansel and Gretal-ish but also uniquely its own. We have a young girl, Nadya, who has lost many of the most important people in her life (her mother died and her brother went off to the army). She is left with her father who has remarried to a wretched woman who may be a witch. The village is suffering from a great famine. Young girls in her village go missing in the dark woods around their home. The villagers are quick to speculate that a monster in the woods is eating the girls. One night Nadya goes missing as well. This story started out a little slow and the *POW* it knocks you on your butt. I actually turned aro... moreund and read it again. And then I turned around and read all the spoilers in the reviews and was further amazed at what I didn't read between the lines.
review 2: 5/5Just to let you know, this novella has absolutely nothing to do with the Grisha trilogy; no Grisha characters, no Grisha powers, ext...nada. This is a completely different story set in Ravka. I read this in the middle of the night and it succeed in creeping me out. Reading this made me feel like reading one of the Grimm's fairy tales. It is dark and mysterious and the story line was intricately crafted. I like this novella even better than the Grisha trilogy. Also, the ending was phenomenal! This is one of the best novella I've ever read. less
