review 1: This book is AWESOME!!!! I have almost no complaints. First of all the story and writing in this book were GREAT! the story is very unique and the world is built perfectly and most of the characters are good and non-2 dimensional.I liked all of the characters except 1. Alina was a GREAT heroine, she was strong and funny and awesome and flawed and everything that i like in a heroine. The Darkling was the perfect villain character for the story and he was also likable in a grotesque way(my fav of the love interests). Even Genya who turned out to be a MASSIVE disappointment(in a way that i saw coming but was hoping wasn't going to happen) was a well structured funny awesome character who i really liked and the teachers were both cool but mean in a good way and they added to t... morehe story well. The one character that i didn't like was Mal. He INFURIATED me to no end for the second half of the book. He didn't leave the army BECAUSE of Alina, it wasn't Alina's FAULT that he left, he left of his OWN FUCKING ACCORD AND SHE HAD NO SAY IN THE MATTER! that was the worst part about this whole book for me, the whole time they were talking and she was blaming herself for it and he had the GAL to blame her too made me SO ANGRY! he was such a douche no wonder she fell for the Darkling when the other option was him. Yes he wasn't all bad but that just made me so mad that i couldn't get over it!So overall i give this book a 8.5/10 because i loved it but along with my 1 complaint i just have a feeling that there was something missing that i can't put my finger on. But it is amazing and i am continuing with the series :)
review 2: Great book! I am normally a very picky reader but I absolutely loved this one!As others pointed out the story line is pretty generic: a peasant finds out she has a special power and is swooped away to learn about how special she actually is. But it's the generic writing that makes this story so great! There is a reason why this type of story-line is so popular: it's a great read!If you like this basic story line (like I do) than you will love this book. It's really well-written, fast paced, and full of adventure. If you like books by Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, The Throne of Glass Series and other similar books that there is a good chance that you will like this series. less

This book was completely confusing but the good kind. The author had you believing one thing and then all of a sudden that comes crashing down. Then after it happens your like how could i have missed that! But all around this was an excellent book. It is a good quick book. I really enjoyed it and recommend it for everyone to read. It will have you on the edge of your chair the whole time your reading it!

I went into this book with absolutely no background information except for the knowledge that lots of people loved this book, and now I see why. Shadow and Bone was a well crafted story, with intensely drawn characters (except for the bad guy who could have used some more fleshing out), and a richly developed world. This was a very enjoyable and original read and I look forward to reading the next one!

The book was awesome but I had a hard time reading and figuring out the terms used in the story.
