review 1: Such a sweet addition to Hilda's story. She and her mom have moved to the city from their lovely (but squashed by a giant) home in the mountains. Hilda is a bit stir-crazy (naturally) and her mom is concerned about city perils (naturally). Thankfully she ditches her awful schoolmates and makes friends with an injured, temporarily-amnesiac bird instead. Despite the change of scenery, the story is still so charming and the illustration is fantastic.
review 2: I adore the books in this Hilda series. The drawing & characterization reflect the eye of a skilled film maker w/shifting perspectives, zooming in and out for dramatic effect. The large format (the size of a picture book) allow of a diverse array of frame sizes and lend themselves particularly well to scenes
... more features the giant. Hilda and her mom live together and have a healthy relationship, even if they don't always see eye to eye...Hilda is given license to explore the world around her and express her imagination. In this story, Hilda and her mother have just moved from the country to the city and Hilda is not quite enjoying it...she wants to explore the neighborhood, but her mother thinks it is too dangerous so will not give her the free reign she enjoyed in the countryside. Eventually her mother relents and lets her explore with some new schoolmates...the kids turn out to be trouble makers and do things like throw rocks at birds. After one bird get knocked out, it loses its memory and Hilda sets about trying to help the bird regain it as well as remember the very important thing it was supposed to do that day...when Hilda doesn't return at the scheduled time, her mother is frantic and set about on her own journey to find her daughter. less
