review 1: As another reviewer put it this books has a promising premise and an interesting twist on an old tale, but the writing was somewhat lackluster. I gravitate to creative, eye catching writing styles. I want each character to have it's own unique outlook so we as readers can see so clearly who they are there is no comparison or blending between past favorite characters. Rory was interesting, she just wasn't presented as interesting. The ingredients were all there, quirks, her own personal thoughts, but they were just stated, listed, not really spread out like a character should be when a reader is becoming acquainted with a character. Anyways, I am glad I stuck it out because I ended up liking the story line and what takes place. It definitely held my interest enough to read ... morethe next book and I'm so glad I did because the writing and the story itself got even better!
review 2: Rory (short for Aurora) is in for an adventure when her parents take a job in England. She jumps at the chance to go to a boarding school in London. However, she gets more of an adventure than she bargained for as a Jack-the-Ripper-style killer stalks the very grounds of her school. When she begins to see things that no one else can, Rory is introduced to a whole new world that includes the existence of ghosts, and a whole new kind of evil. I had initially thought there would be more of a Jack the Ripper tie-in, which is what attracted me to this book in the first place. However, the story was interesting enough to induce me to finish it. I could have done with a lot less making out sessions (in the library no less!), but no doubt that will appeal to young adult readers. less
