review 1: There's no way to review this without spoilering you in all kinds of ways. So I'm not going to say much. This is the best third book in a series I have ever read (what a weird sentence, but the truth). It was nothing what I thought it would be, but in a good way. The plot developed in ways I had never expected, almost everything that happened was a surprise to me (good surprises, and bad surprises). Just know that Maureen did the first two books justice, she did more than that. Readers won't be disappointed.
review 2: I WAS SO EXCITED TO READ THIS BECAUSE THE MADNESS UNDERNEATH ENDED WITH MY HEART BEING STOMPED ON REPEATEDLY AND AGGRESSIVELY SO WHEN I WAS GIFTED THIS ARC I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO anyway as opposed to TNOS and TMU which spanned over a period of a
... morefew months, TSC spanned over a mere two days but even then, so many things happened in this book that I was highly doubtful it could possibly happen in only two days.I know a lot of people who have also read the ARC gave this five stars but I was quite :/// a lot of the times when reading this book, especially when Freddie appeared and mythology got involved (with the whole Eye of Isis and Oswulf Stone) because I guess I had a vastly different vibe to the settings and how the plot was in the first two books and it definitely didn't involved, like, pagan rituals and stuff but then again if people could see ghosts then this could be real too. And Freddie annoyed me quite a bit (I agreed very much with Boo and Callum's initial reactions) and also I don't know I didn't like anyone interfering with the great Stephen-Rory-Callum-Boo dynamic I've grown to love for the past two books. Any more than that and the optimum number of friends in a squad would be unbalanced.A lot of parts got draggy as well, especially the parts with the mythologies, so much so that I skimmed through them habitually and those were the moments that I actually put them down to do other stuff. I guess I also have mixed feelings about Stephen coming back to life I mean OF COURSE I WISHED STEPHEN WASN'T DEAD but the way he was brought back feels so...forced. Like, why was he not-dead in the first place? Because Rory was a terminus? Then what about Newman? How did he come back as a ghost instead of being not-dead like Stephen? I'd also expected to read about Rory, Callum and Boo actually scouting for Stephen's ghost but it was just written off nonchalantly in a few sentences so okay. There was too much Thorpe and Freddie and Jerome in this book rather than (preferably) Boo and Callum. Considering what happened at the end of TMU, you'd expect to hear more from Boo and Callum. Thorpe's sudden involvement in everything was also so...sudden. I understand that's because of Stephen's death, but I don't know I feel like if Thorpe really does care about the squad and the stuff they handle so much then he wouldn't have been so obscure and hidden in the first two books, when the only times you hear his name ominously was when Stephen called him, and also that time he had to watch Rory act as a terminus. Jerome was factored into this really ridiculously and I don't like the whole Rory-Jerome dynamic portrayed in this book, I mean, yeah, it'd be logical for Jerome to actually do what he did, but the way he just complied with everything even when he didn't know anything yet saw so many things like, that wasn't very Jerome? It was very convenient of him? To keep his mouth shut? It actually would be interesting to see him defy instructions and sic the cops on them and see how they deal with it. I mean, this is sadistic thinking but it's more realistic let's be real. The whole pagan ritual thing with Jane was disturbing to no end and even though it was really well executed (really, REALLY well to be quite honest, especially with the introduction to Sid and Sadie) but throughout the whole thing I just felt like that entire plot nugget felt so out of place in this Shades of London series. There was also a lot of "people having prior knowledge about something but never revealing it": Stephen having prior knowledge about Eye of Isis and Oswulf Stone without telling anyone else, Jane knowing about Rory even before actually meeting her (or Charlotte), Freddie knowing about the Shades (and Stephen knowing about Freddie). The "other dimension" part was also very, I don't know. Confusing? I don't know man, I mean this book was necessary. I needed to know what happened after TMU. But I also feel it was very messy and so full of information bulk and sometimes even ridiculous. I'm not sure how ARCs work so I don't know if there would even be any significant changes to the published copy but anyway. It wasn't totally terrible. Sid and Sadie were so disturbingly evil, I love it. The whole part where they got the Oswulf stone to the river I didn't really get it, but the entire process (especially when the squad went through together omg I just love the squad so much) was nice. I liked the ending too. And of course, Maureen Johnson's ever lovely wit and charm. That's my favourite part of this entire series. Bless you, MJ.Oh, what's that? What do I think about Rory/Stephen?Yes. The answer is yes. Pure one hundred percent yes. less
