review 1: The first book I read from this author and I haven't stopped following her. Nalini Singh is amazing. I haven't read the other books in this series.Micah and Liliana's story is captivating, heart-wrenching, beautiful and erotic. The moment I read the first page, I was hooked and I couldn't stop reading until the end, and then I didn't want to stop. A great twist of the fairy-tale, Beauty and the Beast.
review 2: Setting: Kingdom of Elden, of the Kingdom realm; Black Castle, gateway to the Abyss (servants of evil banished there); Theme: innate knowledge; loving the heart, not the visage; innocence; power; loneliness;Characters:Micah: Lord of the Black Castle, Guardian of the Abyss; when 5 years old, cast away from Elden, to safety, so as to one day return and rec... morelaim their birthright… but spell twisted by the sorcerer; when the last lord retired, Micah stepped in, with sharp headaches if he tried to remember his childhood; a combination of his own magic, Earth magic, and the Guardian magic – wields it all without deliberate thought… it just occurs… example - his skin covered with magical armor – that disappears when he needs to bathe; Liliana: daughter of the Blood Sorcerer and Irina; a ‘beautiful witch mother, and she begat a hatchet-faced mewling brat in return’; in flashbacks, we learn of the horrific life she led – beginning when she was five, and with her father killing her beloved bunny as a black magic sacrifice – to repeated, horrific whippings, that included his blood spiders crawling on her back when he was finished to consume her blood – to his magically forcing her to physically kill the sacrifice required for the magic he wanted her to adopt; bit by bit she learned how to block his magic… and how to be insignificant… and to use only her own blood to energize her magic; Blood Sorcerer: secure in 20 years of ruling; has destroyed the kingdom of Elden – the lands, the people; keeps Liliana around for amusement (not smart); keeps her mother around for abuse – she is magically brainwashed to think she is the lady of the castle and childless; Bard and Jissa: dead (killed by the sorcerer) but alive at Black Castle – just can’t travel beyond; servants / almost friends of Micah; he is a troll? She is a brownie; befriend Lilana; their own romance grows; even when can move onto heaven, chose to stay in the castle;Nicolai… Dayn…Breena… Micah’s siblings; they all return to strike back at the Blood Sorcerer – interestingly without a coordinated, planned way – they just showed up and began to fight… Micah draws on their magic when working on battering the Blood Sorcerer’s protection ward wall… and then they join him as he tries to heal Liliana – not able to until their powers combine;Summary: Liliana has forseen that if Micah does not join his siblings, their strike will fail… she has been working on magically breeching his castle, and on the 5th attempt, succeeds; and Micah just doesn’t know what to do with her… though an adult… and has been hunting the souls of the evil to drag them to the abyss… and strong of heart and mind… he has not been with people… the villagers nearby respect and serve him happily enough, but they fear him… his two closest servants serve him, but with a tinge of fear also… And though a man, many of his reactions to her are as those of a spoiled, but loved, 5-year old; when she tells him he must or must not, and he asks why, and she doesn’t have an answer – he just does as he pleases (like kisses); their courtship is of two innocents, who touch, who wonder about other touches, and especially for him, guided by pleasure, not should and should nots; Liliana works at getting him to remember… aware of the stopwatch that is approaching midnight – when they must strike. He remembers as the Blood Sorcerer is stalking Liliana… and he effectively thwarts his minions (even the man-sized blood spiders – that no one has defeated) – using her advice, using his three magics…And they return, as partners, to defeat the Blood Sorcerer once and for all…And Nicolai and his Jane will rule the kingdom… Daryn and his wife become in charge of the guards… Bree and her berserker return to his land to teach his brothers to be berserkers (with frequent returns)… and Micah continues as Lord of Black Castle, with Liliana at his side… and he returns regularly to infuse the earth with his magic – to aid in its healing… ahhhhMemorable scenes:Liliana has almost not-there breasts, and a large rear, and one leg shorter than the other, and strange eye color, and a slash for a mouth and a large, hook nose; Micah does not see the outer so much, but her spirit much more… and he appreciates her rounded bottom, and the way her breasts and kisses respond to him – and after her father’s death, as he holds her (just escaping death) and she is changed to beautiful, like her mother, but she cannot see a mirror, she looks to Micah and asks is she so much worse, and he answers, ‘I’ll get used to you.” – he loved her being, not her appearance, even before… ahhhAs Micah is showing interest in her, Liliana is sure that when the kingdom is reestablished, Micah will not only need to marry royalty, but he will see true beauty, and reject her just for that… but she finds some reassurance when she realizes he could have taken the beautiful women of the village, but does not – he tells her because he does not like their fear.“I will permit you to cry four times a year. And you will do it when I am here.” Micah demands of Liliana – not liking her tears, not liking her pain.Micah makes the distinction between Liliana kisses (soft, gentle, exploring) to Micah kisses (passionate, all-consuming) – a few times warning her what kind of kiss he is going to give her.Liliana grew up hearing the stories of the princes and princess of Elden from the cook (the only servant almost safe from the sorcerer) – where she hung out as much as possible; and when working on helping Micah remember his short childhood, she told him thoses stores… the summoning of a unicorn story… the siblings bet… three failed – but the unicorn responded to 5 year old Micah’s recitation of the spell, because of his innocence… an innocence that is pure, and continues in his aldulthood; less
