review 1: This entry of the series is far better than the first two. It absorbed my attention, and Dayne and Reda are vivid characters that I could care about and root for. Though it was overtly based on "Little Red Riding Hood," the fairy tale frame became an aside to the story of two people who had both their own baggage as well as extraordinary dangers to overcome in order to find their way to one another. That is how it should be.
review 2: Setting: of the kingdoms realm (where magic – and emotion – trumped) -Royal Castle of Elden, Castle Island and villages surrounding BloodLake; human realm – Cat Black Curiosity Shop; wolfyn realm – Meriden Arch; Theme: fulfilling one’s destiny – falling in love; priorities (revenge or love?)Characters:Dayn: kings secon... mored son; rince Dayn, Forestal of Elden; a Forestal ie hunter; his parents wanted him to marry for politics, he wanted to marry one of his mother’s Guardswomen – in anger, he left the castle – and received his father’s last mindspeak allowed him to see their defeat at the hands of the Blood Sorcerer – and he sent via the vortex to wolfyn realm – the wolfyn were hunted in the kingdoms, and are enemies… so he hides he is of the kingdoms – and lives as their guest… he lives there for 20 years , hiding his vampiric/kingdom background, hooks up once a year with the alpha bitch – taking her blood then, wiping her memory – she uses him to keep from a mate who would take over; he is waiting for a woman to come guide him back home – and he’ll have 4 days to get there; he has a wolfyn part – that came out once in youth – and brought out once to defend Reda;Wolfyn: shape-shifters; enemies of the kingdoms because hunted there;Rutakoppchen: Little Red Riding Hood; Old German story - read to Reda by her mother (part of the kingdoms?) – told she is the young Red… and someday will be the rest of the story; Standing stones – vortex: that shift between realms (human, wolfyn, kingdoms); Reda Weston: perhaps of the royal family of High Reaches; mother gone; superfluous to her brothers and army father; became a cop; froze when went into a coffee store and her partner behind the counter, with a gun at his head… and he died when burglar starts to turn to her, and he tried to deflect him; she has spent a few months trying to deal; and sees a few pages of the book in a mystical store – goes in, asks for the whole book… and when reads the back, finds herself in a vortex – and lands in the wolfyn realm;Benz: Reda’s partner – died when interrupted a crime, and Reda froze when she came in…Moragh: witch; wanting to impress the Blood Sorcerer, has been waiting for a sign as to where Dayn is; ultimately wants to rule/run the kingdom world; spoils things in the wolfyn land – telling them he is a vampire/kingdom realm.. causing Dayn and Reda having to run/hide for their lives on the way to the vortex/arch; Scratch-Eye pack’s sigal – four parallel bloodred slashes crossing an amber wolf’s eye;Keely / Kenar / Candida: pack’s alpha bitch; her manipulative brother who is looking for opportunity to take over the pack; wisewolfyn – who knew who he was vampire/kingdom realm – and is his friend;Hart: Dayn’s royal warehorse; Blood Sorcerer: dark sorcerer; has left the land of Elden in ruins, drawing away all of its magic – leaving the land barren;Summary:Reda and Dayn – drawn together; but Dayn hiding parts of himself – his vampiric part, his wolfyn part… and trying to do what is right… both grow, and when push comes to shove, Dayn realizes that Reda is his priority, rescuing her from Morgath even when hears the battle to rescue the castle begin… ahhhMemorable scenes:Dayn and Keely – met and mated this one night each year, when sex sparked the strongest of changes and the wolfyn stayed largely in wolf form;Focus. Dedication. Discipline. Humility. Gods, no. Not this way. He wanted to make it up to her, to be with her. Their time together had been the brightest spot, not just in the past two decades, but in all the years he had been alive… Sacrifice.When she comes for him, rescuing him from a mob in the kingdoms, she comes in on a horse – and wanting to apologize – “The perfect words didn’t come to him, though.
