review 1: Out of all the books in this series, I liked this the best. The plot and characters were less complicated (in other words, the author did not try too hard) and the topics and maturity were much more appropriate for a junior novel. In this story, an old character from The Left-Handed Lady is revisited. Lady Cecily is in trouble and runs into Enola in public. She leaves Enola a clue in the form of a pink fan. From this clue, Enola figures out what is endangering Cecily. During a rescue attempt, she bumps up against her brother, Sherlock. They help each other out a bit earning Sherlock's respect.Enola is still a fourteen year old girl, abandoned by her mother and living on her own in the slums. In this book she is a more independent person. She whines less and is no... moret living in fear as in the previous novels. I like her as a character better because of it. Nancy Springer seems stuck on the character of Lady Cecily who may have a split personality. I would have liked to see completely new characters in this book instead. Lady Cecily was a strange character in the previous book who I think would have been better left behind. There is still some mature content even though it is now toned down. I would recommend this book for ages 12 and up. It is an interesting mystery for older readers.
review 2: Another fun book in the series. I enjoyed that Springer brought back Lady Cecily. I wondered what had happened to her. When Enola Holmes encounters her friend Lady Cecily hiding behind a pink fan, she finds it peculiar. Cecily is being held hostage in an abysmal orphanage, forced into a miserable marriage. Enola joins forces with the much older famous brother Sherlock who she has fought desperately to elude, and risks her own freedom to rescue her friend. less
