review 1: This book is called The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan by Nancy Springer, an Edgar Award winning author. This is the fourth book of the Enola Holmes Mystery series. This story is set in London in the 19th century. The main characters are Enola Holmes, the protagonist, Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, the two brothers of Enola who are trying to capture her and put her in a boarding school. In the first book Enola's mother had escaped the day of Enola's fourteenth birthday. Enola contacted her two older brother, Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes, who ten years before had a fight with their mother when their father died. Because her mother had escaped she was in her elder’s brother custody. He wanted to send her to a boarding school for girls. Having heard all the stories of boarding ... moreschools and girls dying because of corsets, she didn't want to go there. In a little handmade book, Enola found many clues which led her to hidden money in her mom's room. Using her corset as a bag, she decided to escape. Now she has a fake name and is working for a fake person she invented called Dr. Ragostin, a scientific perditorian. One day while she was in the London ladies' Lavatory, she saw lady Cecily, who had been lost months before, but she had found. Lady Cecily was with two mean looking women. When Cecily looked at her she recognized her, and while passing next to her, she let her fan drop near her. When Enola tried following them, Mycroft tried capturing her. She hit him in her chin and shouted for help. During the confusion, she escaped. Back in her lodging she examined the pink fan and noticed some markings in invisible ink. The message read Help! I am being locked in my room and starved - unless... The message had not been finished. She went to the residence of the Viscount of Inglethorpe. While she was waiting for the guest list she hear the voice of the ha-ha man, that's how she called him because the other day she had fallen in a trap while climbing a fence to enter in a peculiar mansion, and that had had come to the hole and laughed at her. When she got the list she saw that Lady Cecily was going to be married against her own will. When that night she had gone to the peculiar house, she found her brother Sherlock, and helped him out of the hole. When they realized that lady Cecily was not in the house they escaped. When she found out the lodging of lady Cecily, which was in an orphanage, she disguised as an orphan and went to the orphanage were lady Cecily was being held. She found her in the storage room being dressed for the wedding. When only she and lady Cecily were in the room, Enola told her to escape when no one was looking. Enola put on the dress so they thought she was Cecily. When they were about to marry her thinking it was lady Cecily, Mycroft entered the room and stopped the marriage. Enola used this moment to throw the dress at the ladies and the veil at Mycroft. She used the moment to escape. When she found out her plan had worked and saw no sign of Mycroft she went back to her lodgings. The book ends with Mycroft and Sherlock talking about the escape of Enola. Setting made the book a success because this book is set in the 19th century making the story more original for now days most of the stories are set in the present or in the future. Being in the 19th century also makes you realize how centuries ago people lived and how woman were trying to get their right like Enola and her mom did to rebel. While this story is set in London, you can also find out how most of the people lived and were they worked. The setting helps the story because it makes it unique.I would recommend this book because it is really interesting and teaches you some lessons like how most of the people lived and what they had. For example how people lived before when the type writer was the newest invention. I would recommend this book to people that have a lexile over 1000 because this book has a lexile of 1100 having some advanced vocabulary. I would also recommend this book to people that like mystery because this series of book is a mystery series.
review 2: This series just keeps getting better and better. Enola Holmes's voice is strong and true, and her story continues to intrigue and move me. The narration of this audio series by Katherine Kellgren continues to delight and surprise. Kellgren's voicing is fantastic; it's nuanced and wildly entertaining. Overall in this installment, the mystery and adventure are fun and suspenseful, as usual, and the sense of history and attention to detail by Springer are strong. Springer echoes Doyle but tailors her own layered story of family, duty, and individuality. This installment is just beautifully done, and I can't wait to listen to the next! less
