The Jinni
review 1: Very good book, and an intriguing beginning to a new series. I loved that it was set in my hometown of Pittsburgh, and the way Peeler melded the idea of the magical with the decidedly anti-magic atmosphere of the city (which is famous for it's steel and iron) is great. The book also resolved itself in a way I wasn't expecting, uniting two plotlines in an unexpected way. I loved the hero, Oz, and the way the relationship developed between Lyla and him. He has to win her trust--being her "master" doesn't exactly endear him to her--and watching her barriers toward him break down is great. I also loved that he wasn't the alpha male asshole hero we so often see in romances. He's kind, intelligent, and caring--in short, probably the kind of guy you'd want to have around in... more real life. Because Oz is the novice in this world, and Lyla has been a jinni for almost 1,000 years, the dynamic between them is the opposite of what you see in many fantasies. More often than not, she has to save him, because he just doesn't know what he's gotten himself into. Nonetheless, he doesn't come off as stupid or incompetent, a delicate balance that Peeler pulls off well.My one complaint is that I felt there were a few too many supporting characters, and because of that none of them were as well-developed as I would have liked. Rather than Lyla's friends being interesting characters unto themselves, they were just sort of a big mish-mash of eccentrics.I couldn't put the book down, and I'm really looking forward to the next one in the series.
review 2: Lyla, a jinni, works as a belly dancer at Purgatory. She is unbound, and able to control a bit of power but nothing compared to when she is bound. Enter Oz, a magi that manages to find Lyla and bind her to do his bidding. His goal is to find a friend from his past that went missing after her family was killed. Lyla and Oz's journey together is packed with misadventures and things that go bump in the night. From bugbears to crazy vampire kids out to get them, they have a lot to handle when trying to find his friend. The characters in Jinn and Juice are quite diverse, there is a bit of everything you could want. Trolls, sirens, and will o' the wisp, oh my! The big bad villain, Kouros, was introduced fairly early in the book by telling Lyla's past. Kouros cursed/tricked a young human Lyla into becoming a jinni. Those trickster jinnis manage to wiggle around orders easily. This was a pretty enjoyable read, the plot is sound, the world is set well, and the characters are engaging. I'd recommend this book if you're looking for a jinni Urban Fantasy. less
