review 1: This sci-fi short story, being the prequel to Ness' The Knife of Never Letting Go, gripped me from the very first sentence, and well, never let go. Twelve going on thirteen-year old Viola relates the harrowing account of her family's travels of leaving the comforts of home for that of New World, their new planet to be colonized. Not everything will go as planned. Ness' breakneck speed of storytelling and emotional narrative here left me very much excited to read on in this series.
review 2: This is a short story describing Viola's trip to the New World. It was marginally better than The Knife of Never Letting Go. Viola in the story is a typical teen who is angry at her parents for volunteering them to be the first settlers on the New World. Throughout the trip,
... more Viola is angry and rude to her parents. She doesn't want to go, as it means being away from her friends and school for a year. She is also afraid of the unknown. It was a free book on Amazon. less
