review 1: Following Primrose Squarp, the main character from Everything on a Waffle, for a year. Primrose tries to encourage the off-again on-again romance of her uncle Jack to Miss Bowzer the owner of the Girl on the Red Swing restaurant. She works to save Mendolay Mountain from loggers. But best of all she makes a new friend, the foster kid Ked who just moved in with Bert and Evie. A heart warming realistic fiction set in British Columbia Canada.
review 2: This story is the sequel to Everything on a Waffle, which I have not read. Primrose, the main character is a likable young girl who seems to be looking for a best friend, although she seems to have many friends who are adults. She spends a lot of time with Evie and Bert, who were her foster parents when her parents
... more were lost at sea for a year. I take it this happened in Waffle. Primrose also spends a lot of time and effort trying to get Miss Bowzer and her Uncle Jack together. Also part of the plot in this book is about a logging company trying to clear cut Mendolay Mountain, which can be seen from Miss Clarice's B&B out on Jackson Road. Many of the inhabitants of Coal Harbor come together to oppose the logging, joining with environmental types who have also come to town to oppose this logging. Primrose gains many insights into life from her relationships with her adult friends, but what really changes Primrose is her friendship with Ked, a foster child who lives with Bert and Evie for a brief time. Basically this was a good story with interesting characters, especially Primrose, but I didn't really care for the eccentricities in the story. All the characters were a bit eccentric, some more than others. I'm not sure today's student readers will like reading this book, since it is not full of action or adventure, but it would be a thought-provoking choice for a reading group. less
