review 1: From My Newsletter Number 74:This review is on Born Of The Ashes from The Frontiers Saga Episode 11 by Ryk Brown. It is part of a continuing series of ebooks that have been very entertaining from the beginning. Each new release seems to be as good or better than the last. Episode 11 begins with a security force of Ghatazhak soldiers allied with Captain Nathan Scott trying to quell an attack on a Sydney recruitment center on Earth by Jung sympathizers. They must use deadly force to defeat the Jung regulars still on Earth and try to convince the local population that the Jung is not their friends. This story continues after Captain Nathan Scott defeats the remaining Jung ships in space above Earth, but he knows the Jung will return in greater force soon. He needs time to rep... moreair the Aurora and build out the Celestia to face a strong retaliation Jung force coming his way. He sends for help from his alliance partners in the Pentaurus Cluster, but he is not sure they can help him in time before the Jung return. The Jung does return quicker than expected with a superior force of attack ships determined to destroy the Aurora and/or the Earth. Nathan has no choice but to defend Earth with the ships and people he has. The odds of surviving the battle to come are very low for Nathan’s defenders. The Earth will suffer severe nuclear damage once the Jung attack, even if Nathan’s forces can defeat them. The actual space battle scenes are as fast paced, thrilling and as vivid as any you will find in a military science fiction space opera. This is the author’s eleventh book in the series and the plot never weakens. Saving Earth is Nathan’s prime objective, but the outcome is never certain until the very end. I give this book four stars because the story is great and the characters are fully developed. The writing is first rate and the story continues to keep me entertained and interested in reading the next edition. I cannot wait for Episode 12 to see what happens next.
review 2: This is a great book in The Frontiers Saga series. It is perhaps the best one so far. The crew of the Aurora have liberated Earth…almost. Jung infiltrators are still making life miserable down on Earth and the problem with liberating a world is that afterwards you must be able to hold it which is easier said than done.In this book we get to follow the crew of the Aurora, their friends and what is left of Earth’s government in their struggle to hold on to what they have liberated. At the same time Prince Casimir is struggling with an uncooperative parliament when trying to bring reinforcements to Earth. There is plenty of action, both dirt side and in space interleaved with preparations to survive the coming onslaught by the Jung. Unfortunately the Jung also have some surprises for the defenders and when they bring in their huge battle platforms go downhill rapidly.Although the Jung do not play exactly as Captain Scott & Co would have liked to the book do not really bring us any big surprises. It is good, solid and uncomplicated adventure with our bunch of likable, and now familiar, characters. The action is really good. Especially the one in space and, although not fully completed yet, Aurora’s sister ship now joins the fight. If I should complain about something it would be the obstructive dimwits in the Takaran parliament. I simply do not like that kind of political nonsense. Also, our friends are now capable of fabricating pretty much anything, including new fabricators, thus I find it rather strange that they still seem incapable of equipping the Aurora and her sister ship with shield generators instead of letting them be shot to pieces all the time.Anyway, I am quite looking forward to the next book. I would not say that this one ended in a cliffhanger but rather at a logical pause in the conflict. It will be interesting to see where the author goes next. less
