review 1: An Icelandic mystery, "Day is Dark" walks well between the native Greenlanders' beliefs and a modern-day cooped-up-in-a-remote-place team of scientists and engieneers. A group of Icelanders and Greenlanders, security folks and attorneys and a doctor along with two of the former team members go back to the remote scene to figure out what has happened. With the assistance if three local folks and the heroine, Thora, an Icelandic attorney, the truth finally comes out. Meanwhile there are ghosts, spirits, diseases, sled dogs, polar bears, and humans all viable suspects for the murders. Plenty of cold, snow, ice, and myths to give local flavor.
review 2: A riveting opening Chapter promises an exciting thriller. The Greenland setting adds mystery. The characters a
... morere mainly nasty. The ingredients are sound, yet from Chapter 2 onwards the author fails to blend the ingredients in a way that is truly captivating. I found myself reading because I was awake in the wee hours - not because I was dying to find out who did what to whom. One reviewer used the term 'wooden'. That works for me. I didn't think of abandoning this book at any time, yet I am relieved to have soldiered through it to experience the joy of the final page - rather like finishing a plateful of steamed broccoli. It wasn't unbearable, but it needed a tasty sauce to improve it. I have gathered that Thora is a character in a series. I suspect that the author is under pressure to pump these books out - and that the best part is the plot brainstorming, followed by a boring grind to get words onto enough pages to sell as a book. I guess I related to wooden in other reviews because I feel that this book is mechanical and formula driven. My sense is that Yrsa Sigurdardottir can be brilliant, yet is volume driven. Writing seems to be a job for Yrsa - not a calling... less

Thriller set in Greenland. Quite interesting and atmospheric but translation occasionally clunky.

It started out really interesting and went downhill from there. Drug on and on ad nauseum.
Candy
Least favorite of the 4 (but the translations get better as it goes along)
