review 1: I put down this book after about 30 pages, but not for the reason you might think. I wasn't aware that the author had ventured off in stories as seen by Inspector Erlendur's colleagues. In fact no matter what it says up there in the graphic, this is NOT "Black Skies : an Inspector Erlendur Novel ", the author has done this before with a novel from the POV of his female collegue (whose name I forget) which I quite enjoyed. However I never really liked Sigurdur Óli, so finding out the novel was based on him, was a big dissaapointment. So it wasn't til several months later during one of the recent power outages we've had here in the US, that I picked it up again. I still didn't like Siggi, there was almost nothing I found in him as a person that I could relate too, in my opi... morenion it is dangerous ground for an author to make their lead character unlike-able to a reader. But the overall quality of writing and a growing sense of respect for Siggi did win out and I raced through the rest of the book
review 2: I always enjoy Arnaldur Indriðason, and BLACK SKIES ranks right up there. Despite the fact that it's billed as "An Inspector Erlendur" novel, Erlendur is present here only by his absence, which is noted several times in the course of the narrative. Instead we get Sigurdur Oli, a conservative who loves American football, American rock music, and just about anything else American. Sigurdur Oli does turn out to be a good detective, a person of compassion, and a man of principle. It's a good detective story, a good read. Enjoy it! less

Good, but gloomy like Scandinavian stories.
