review 1: This book was a bit slower than the first volume and the series still lacks subtlety. I enjoyed each of these stories immensely but they didn't pack as much of a punch as the last volume (particularly the buildup and finale in issue #5). The internet-troll super-people, encounter with Cardiac, confrontation with Peter and foundation for the Green Goblin storyline were all pulled off well but none of these had the same gut-wrenching power and tension of the last volume where you constantly wondered what Otto was going to do next. The confrontation with Peter in issue #9 (and the arguments between characters about right and wrong) point to the value of this series and bring up relevant issues about contemporary superheroes. However, I wish that Slott wouldn't present these s... moreituations in such a didactic way by having the characters argue with each other in such obvious language (I will also be sorely disappointed if he starts to beat us over the head with who is right and who is wrong as the series continues). The scene with the little girl who Cardiac is trying to save was excellent in this regard because it showed Otto grow as a character. So many other comics rely on the 'obvious' moral choices of their characters and basically end right where they begin. By avoiding such easy (and boring) resolutions the series covers the topic of justice and what it means to be a 'hero' in a timely and compelling way.
review 2: Again, the writing isn't bad, the art isn't bad, but I feel extremely underwhelmed by the story. I think the problem that I have is that we finally get to see some of the other heroes looking into this total change in Spider-man's behavior and they just give him a verbal warning. Spider-man shot someone and he gets a verbal warning. It just doesn't add up. I think the main reason I was so thrown by this is Wolverine's reaction. He's willing to see what happens next. Yes, Wolverine has been around the longest and has the bloodiest hands on the Avengers, but he and Parker were friends for a while now. They've shown that Spider-man is the person that Wolverine turns to when he's feeling vulnerable. He's the one person that Wolverine knows doesn't have blood on his hands. This is why Wolverine would be the most concerned, not the least. It is nice that Marvel at least committed to this ridiculous premise and let it continue for more than two story arcs. Status Quo may be god, but they're not letting him control everything, yet. I think that's the main reason that this storyline is hard to enjoy. Obviously Parker is going to come back. Otto won't be able to stay Spider-man forever. less
