review 1: Ladybug Girl, by David Soman and Jacky Davis, tells the story of Lulu as she spends her day wandering her back yard with her dog Bingo. Lulu’s Parent’s are busy with stuff to do around the house, and her older brother is off playing baseball with his friends. Which leaves Lulu alone to find something to do on her own. And of course, with any little girl with a messy room, there is nothing to do. As she wanders around the house she slowly makes her way to her rather large backyard, where she discovers she’s not just Lulu, she is Ladybug Girl! Saver of Ants, crosser of giant lake sized and shark invested puddles, and builder of rock walls. And she is definitely not too little to do it.Ladybug girl manages to capture the feelings of being the youngest sibling and bein... moreg treated as almost like a problem to an older sibling, as Lulu’s brother makes a comment that Lulu cannot play with him since she is ‘too little’. Lulu then begins to discover her own sense of self, and that it doesn’t matter what her brother thinks. She realizes that she can be anything she wants. The Illustrations manages to convey this message across well, with featuring Lulu wearing several different costumes, but then settling for the costume of ‘Ladybug girl’, becoming her own super heroine. The illustrations manage to make her seem heroic and amazing even with the smallest things. Adding breeze and movement to make her seem important. It also displays her emotions and expressions well, whether it being sad, happy, or even angry with her brother’s dismissive behaviour of her. This is a great book for preschoolers, who are just discovering themselves, or possibly have an older sibling that they just don’t understand.
review 2: Oh I'm just swooning over the art. I had three sons, no daughters, and would have loved a little girl just like Lulu. At first, when we see her messy room just full of toys, and hear her fuss that there's nothing to do, I was concerned that this was going to be an 'issues' book and that she will be learning not to whine. Heck, I wanted to tell her that what she can do is tidy her room! But no, she's a very lucky little girl who lives in an area big enough to safely go exploring all morning long. And her costume doubles as inspiration - it's not at all contrived or surprising that we discover, with her, that girls can be superheroes!I'm not sure I want to read the other books in the series. This was perfect just the way it was. less
