review 1: Diane Chamberlain's books and Jodi Picoult's books are definitely cut from the same cloth (Picoult's are faster paced, Chamberlain's more prone to excess verbiage, but also more developed characters), and the Midwife's Confession fits that bill. The book is good- it kept me reading, but the continued plot twists, though interesting, started to seem expected by the end of the book, and I disliked the epilogue- found it very short and unfulfilling after a 400+ page novel to tack on a two page and-this-is-how-they-turned-out generic ending. Eh. On the other hand, I enjoyed the focus on a practically entirely female cast of characters, and the very flawed character of Noelle, especially. A little heavy-handed with the foreshadowing and symbolism for my liking, but overall,... more a readable book that Picoult fans would enjoy.
review 2: I actually wasn't expecting to like this book as well as I did. Heartbreaking situations... I really can't say much without spoiling the story, but briefly the story is centered around 3 friends, one of which is a midwife. She has a troubled past and deep secrets and commits suicide. The remaining 2 friends are left to unravel the secrets of the past while still struggling to love and forgive the friend they lost. less
