review 1: Don Giovanni, a handsome, young nobleman of Sicily has his life abruptly changed when the eruption of Mount Etna causes an earthquake and tsunami that devastates the city of Messina in 1169. He is forced to leave his home when he runs out of money. On All Saints All Souls day, a day which commemorates the faithful departed, this well- dressed, mysterious man offers him a wager. To give up his beauty for 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days in exchange for a satchel that will provide Don Giovanni with endless wealth. If he bathes or changes his clothes before time is up then the deal is off. This was one of my favorite books. Wonderfully written and kept me addicted from the first page. It was interesting to see how much someone changes when they don't have their beauty or compani... moreonship and are forced to live the opposite of what they are used to. This is definitely a recommended read.
review 2: What if you met the devil at the crossroads and he offered you a purse that would fill with whatever amount of gold you asked it to give? You'd probably ask what's the catch, right? Well, in this fairy tale situated in ancient Sicily, the catch is that Don Giovanni cannot bathe or change his clothes for three years, three months, and three days. To make the wager even more enticing, Don Giovanni is a nobleman who has lost his wealth and been thrown out into the cold streets of poverty. The bet is taken, and this reader was intrigued and saddened by the horror of choices surrounding beauty vs. wealth. A quick read! less
