review 1: I loved this book! I was so glad to read about two kindred spirits who have suffered loss and found love again. Not to mention that I felt this version of the Ghost of St. Giles was more apt than the previous. He had a plausible reason for devoting his life to the cause of helping others because he was in grief over the loss of his wife. All in all, a wonderful read and I can't wait to read about Artemis and the duke!
review 2: After reading a plethora of depressing, grim and somber books (some with sprinkles of violence), I decided it was time for a change in genre. I consulted a friend regarding my next book and she beamed and said, “Sounds like you need romance and some laughs”. I then perused the Goodreads romance recommendations and chose “Lord of Da
... morerkness” by Elizabeth Hoyt. The cover alone made me sense that I would be in for a hilarious ride. The synopses for “Lord of Darkness” made me cringe and laugh; which confirmed that this was the correct choice. The story begins when Lady Margaret decides to visit her husband in London after two years. Their last encounter was on their wedding day but now she was back in London, with a mission…to have his baby. Lady Margaret and her family barge into Lord Godric St. John’s (yes that is his name) life and set up camp in his home unannounced. When she sees him for the first time in years, she thinks he’s elderly and boring. But there is more to Godric than meets the eye. The 37 year old vigilante protects the streets of London as the “Ghost of St. Giles” and currently trying to stop the “lassie snatchers”; horrible people who kidnap young girls and have them work in sweatshops. When she sees her husband shirtless for the first time (and notices his insane abdominals), she retracts her “elderly” comment and falls in love with him. Yay for being shallow! Lady Margaret was ok in my eyes the moment she declared she wanted to use Godric for procreating. Props to you girl, you know what you want! However, as the story progressed and she was clearly falling in love with him, she continued to cling on to the idea that she was still in love with her deceased boyfriend, Roger. There were many eye rolling moments from me each time she’d harp on betraying Roger whenever she had sex with Godric.I really wanted to hate Godric St. John, but I couldn’t. He was the typical brooding emo lead. There were key moments in the story that just made me fall in love with him:1) Godric is a mind reader. When he was making love to Margaret (the second time) he somehow sensed she was thinking of another man. I was incredibly intrigued and wondered if he was a telepath (you never know with these stories). How did he know what was going through her mind considering he only made love to her one other time? He is just unreal.2) Godric casually used the word, “Titties” in a flashback. I’d no idea this slang was used in the early 1700s. This novel has taught me soo much, it’s quite incredible.3) During a dinner with his family and his wife, Godric tells everyone that children should be hung up on walls like pictures. He horrified everyone and continued to share his thoughts nonchalantly. He was being sarcastic!4) And finally, Godric is Batman. This dude risks his life, saves lives and stops evil doers. There is also the kick ass costume he dons; wears a black leather mask and gloves. He also had a butler, Moulder who is obviously Gregorian Alfred!Overall, the story was a bit corny and ridiculous. I would have given this story one star because of the cover alone, but because of Godric’s awesomeness, I bumped it up to a two. The characters weren’t memorable, the plot was underwhelming but there were some bright moments that had me laughing out loud. less
