review 1: Still enjoying this series though was hoping that Kate would teach a certain character a lesson in not meddling with the magical human. However the gang were all here, well almost all, and there were a few new shapeshifters to get to know. Do like the fact that Curran' s pack contains all sorts, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.Anyway it's off to the black sea to guard a pregnant woman carrying twins, whose father sounds like a complete git, and whose husbands seem to be a pair of spineless idiots. Everything seems to get dangerous very quickly with alsorts of plotting going on.
review 2: Magic Rises is Book Six in the Kate Daniels Series. I have now read Books 1- 6. Book 7 was published July 2014.This book takes Curran, Kate, other members of the A
... moretlanta Pack and the (well-know to readers of this series) owner of a large ship, across the ocean to Eastern Europe (Georgia) to a meeting with 3 other shapeshifter packs, a few new friends and an old and powerful enemy. This crossing has to be by ship, as the shifting magic makes planes impractical. I wonder why boats and cars can be outfitted with magic/tech engines and planes cannot? I am guessing that a suddenly stalled car or even ship doesn’t compare to a plane plummeting out of the sky.The reason for this trip is Panacea. This substance can reverse loupism. Loupism usually carries a death sentence, as its sufferers become insane killing machines. Before Curran leaves Atlanta his new edict is to put any loupism sufferers into a medically induced coma for as long as possible until Panacea can be obtained. So while everyone knows this trip is a trap, it must be accomplished in order to acquire Panacea. The payment for the Panacea is for the Atlanta Pack to provide protection of shapeshifter Desandra currently pregnant with twins. Desandra must be protected from just about everybody at Lord Megobari’s castle, including Desandra’s father, Jarek Kral. Curran is also expected to mediate any conflicts among the other 3 packs all waiting for the birth of the twins. As usual the author provides details from clothing to geography to arcane mythology, which enables the reader to visualize everything from castle construction to cave walls. Even the physicality of creatures previously not seen in this series becomes easier to visualize. The author (actually authors, as Ilona Andrews is actually a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team.) suggests in the Acknowledgements the bonus short story found at the end of this book be read first. I agree with this advice. The ending does a great job of both satisfying the reader of a stand-alone book, while encouraging the readers of the series to move to the next book. I recommend this book (and series) to readers of magic, mythology, fantasies and alternate worlds. less
