Brotherband Chronicles
review 1: Yes, this is another catch-up review that is late. I shall do my best, as always.Rangers Apprentice was a major part of my childhood, and, as a spin off, Brotherband never disappoints. Scorpion Mountain is set before the last Rangers Apprentice book, and it’s delightful to see some more of old friends from RA. We head back to the deserts Arrida, this time to face down a bloodthirsty cult dedicated to a scorpion goddess of death. All I can say is that once again, John Flanagan created another book I couldn’t put down. This book may be aimed at children, and while that may show in the simplicity of the writing, the characters are realistic and have depth. The series takes the characters through all the things everyone goes through, including self doubt and identity proble... morems. It’s always wonderful to see the author take the outcasts of his alternate medieval world and make what’s unique about them their strength. This review and all my reviews are also on my blog. :)
review 2: Scorpion Mountain has everything you expect/want from a John Flanagan book. Action, humour, clever plans, Rangers and coffee. This addition to the brotherband series is fast paced, action packed and wonderfully simple. There were so many aspects of this book that I enjoyed. It's just so easy to read without all the annoying lovey dovey stuff that is in most books these days. Instead the books focus on friendship, teamwork and learning how to use your strengths. John Flanagan is really great at teaching people how to do healthy relationships and how to do conflict in a mature way. The characters are often quick to realise their own faults and learn from their mistakes, which is something that I think is really important for young people to learn. The character development was great, particularly for Wulf and Ingvar. I also felt as though Stig had a stronger role in this one than in the last two books, which is something that I've wanted to happen.Another part of the book that I loved was that there were a few old faces from John's Rangers Apprentice series and several references to past adventures. These made me feel so nostalgic! I loved that Gilian was a main character in this one, because although he was in Slaves of Socorro he only really had a few moments of awesomeness. In this one he is one of the pivotal players for the mission the brotherband must embark on. he also seems to use his sword more often when he is with the skandians than when he is with the other rangers, which is always fun to read. The way in which the danger/problems were resolved were always interesting and often unexpected, which ironically is what you expect from a John Flanagan book. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was Lydia. I just do not like her character. But thats probably just me and not really a fault to the book. less
