review 1: Recently I attended the Rhode Island Festival of Children's Books and Authors where I picked up a copy of Frank Einstein and the Antimatter Motor: Book One in a new science fiction series by Jon Scieszka. During his presentation Scieszka informed his audience that the series is planned to be six books in all, each one addressing a different aspect of the vast field of science. In this first book we meet super nerd Frank Einstein, his long time friend Watson, and Frank's equally nerdy Grandpa Al. Frank and Watson are in pursuit of the ultimate science prize and Frank knows exactly how to win it, invent an Antimatter motor. This should be simple for any middle school science nerd, right? What Frank doesn't plan on is the spying and dirty tricks of T. Edison who will do ... moreanything, including cheat, to win the prize himself. Just like a mad scientist, Edison, and his sidekick Mr. Chimp, are out to rule the world, or at least the city of Midville. I've never been one for delving very much into science so this book not only made science accessible to me but it was actually quite enjoyable to read as well. Published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. of New York, the look of the book is similar to the Wimpy Kid series, published by the same company. I believe Jon Scieszka has found another winning combination to encourage boys to read and I'm sure that many boys in grades 4-6 will quickly snatch this one up.
review 2: Very mixed about this book. It was fine and I'm sure kids will enjoy it. At first I thought it was doing a good job of teaching some science facts, but then it got to the point where I feel like the science being described would be over kid's heads. It also feel really short in the funny department, especially coming from Scieszka. It felt a lot more like a cartoon than a well written book. I'd never discourage my students from reading it, but I can't say I'd recommend it either. less
