Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman

review 1: Hickman shifts his plots forward in this volume as the group is scattered to deal with different crises. There are a lot of nice moments: Galactus' fear at the return of Franklin Richards' powers, the Thing getting a much-needed night out as Ben Grimm and a bunch of child geniuses debating how to close a door against an oncoming horde of aliens.It's not all serious--Hickman gets some laugh lines in here, particularly with the new Yancy Street Gang and the destructive tendencies of the young clone of the Wizard. I didn't like the Namor/Sue dynamic so much or Valeria's excursion to Doom, but the rest of the volume does a good job of bringing the family together. Even the cliche of a big death is dealt with in a nice fashion with a moving coda issue (albeit one with spotty ... moreart).
review 2: Jonathan Hickman does such a great job of intertwining huge scientific ideas with the family elements that always have an impact with the Fantastic Four. The Ben/Johnny dynamic is done so well here and the outcome which, even though quite old, I don't want to spoil, is heart-wrenching. Susan is also portrayed so well as the strong female character that comics need. Steve Epting's are was great as usual. One thing that bothered me was that lack of narration or setup to get readers up to speed. There are quite a lot of characters, especially within the Future Foundation, and it would be nice if they were profiled, named, or clarified better. Overall though, a very good book! less
