review 1: I just couldn't finish this book. I gave it a good effort because I wanted to like it. It was far too 'Oooh-ra-look-at-me-I'm-a-tough-cop/martial-arts-badass-who's-going-to-save-the-world-single-handedly' for me. I'm not the demographic this book was intended for and there was a lot of eye-rolling on my part, I'm sad to report. The main character was in no way likeable and the other characters were very bland. It was very much not my thing.
review 2: I really liked this book. I didn’t really like the beginning, there was not enough information being given which was really frustrating but as soon as Joe Ledger joined the DMS (Department of Military Sciences) things went bad fast and I started learning things about who was involved with the start of this infec
... moretion and the things the DMS had to do to stop it. When it got to parts where Mr. Church the leader of the DMS had to totally defy the constitution to protect the United States I felt like becoming a government Conspirator with how invasive the DMS got. They would set up spy cameras in places without the consent of whoever owns that establishment and find out everything about everyone they needed to with a computer program called Mind Reader which can find out everything that you have ever done that has been recorded to a computer. That just kind of creeped me out. The main reason I read this book was because I had read the Rot and Ruin series first and found out that Joe Ledger in those books had an entire series about him and how the apocalypse had started. I didn’t really like how in between important parts of the book like when they were fighting zombies that the perspective was switched to Gault or Amirah or someone else that I found to be a less important at the time. But even when that happened the author Johnathan Maberry did a great job letting the pieces fall together. less
