review 1: Set slightly in the future, ghosts, or Visitors as they are over-kindly called, have overtaken London for the last fifty years. It is only children who can sense them enough to deal with them. Kind of a Ghost-Busters twist. Great for kids because who doesn't want to believe that they know more than adults (and in this case - they really do) and who must solve problems without the help of adults.I don't love ghost stories (not a Stephen King fan), but this was really good and I look forward to reading the next one (though I did have a nightmare last night involving a ghost, which I never do. Can't blame it on this one alone - I also read "The Graveyard Book" yesterday).Great scary story for younger kids as the three characters who go about solving cases are funny, clever... more, and make mistakes - just like kids.
review 2: Well, this was fabulous. It was surprisingly spooky, given that it's a YA book, and for once there were actual, legit reasons given as to why teenagers were the ones doing the ghost hunting while adults stood around doing nothing (essentially, the older you get, the more of your ghost-sensing abilities you lose, so it has to be kids and teenagers). The characters were great. Lockwood is pretty cocky, but also really good at what he does (he reminded me a little of Mycroft from Every Breath, but with ghosts). Lucy is a great narrator, and George floats between comic relief and being a badass nerd. They're teenagers who fight ghosts with not much more than salt and iron, who live on their own, and who go above and beyond to solve the crimes that created the ghosts they're hunting in the first place. It was a fun mixture of ghosts/blood/spookiness and entertaining characters backed up by compelling storytelling. I'll definitely be tracking down the sequel! less

Fantastic, spooky fun, among the best of its YA niche. As good or better than his Bartemeus trilogy.

not a new or fascinating read like the bartimaeus triology..... just manages to be mediocre...
