review 1: Fantastically original, fast paced and a hugely entertaining read. I pre-read this title before sharing it with my 8 year old son and am glad I did. Most of the reader recommendations put this book in the target range of grades 4-7, and though Stroud manages to nicely skirt most of the horror that is linked to the supernatural content of the story, there are a few instances where the images created and back stories spun end up dancing too closely to an edge too dark and macbre for the younger readers at my house. With that said, I cannot recommend this book highly enough and while I thoroughly enjoyed every delicious detail [I've already ordered the next installment and am eagerly awaiting its arrival!], I think it's a tale better reserved for the 12 years [7th grade] & ... moreolder crowd, IMO.
review 2: Meh. Not funny or exciting enough. I'm a huge fan of Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy, but this book lacked humor, mostly because it didn't have Bartimaeus's hilarious first person narrative. Lucy is no substitute. Also, the story dragged ... it seemed forever before anything really happened. There was insufficient background information about how the Problem started. Also, the plot was lackluster; I figured out the bad guy's game almost immediately. less

An enjoyable adventure, with kids that are only slightly too witty and dashing to be believable.
