review 1: (4.5 Stairs)Quite a scary read. The plot of the story was very good, with plenty of mystery. The characters were also very enjoyable. They were the sort that I always wanted to know what they would do or think next. The book was really broken up into two separate stories: an introduction and the a specific case, although everything makes sense in the end. The ending so was enjoyable and it really make me want to read the next book. Happy reading!
review 2: The Screaming Staircase was an interesting and fun little novel recommended to me by another friend. At first, I was certain it was steampunk, but the body of text begs to differ. It seems like a cross between Victorian technology and modern times. Say, if time went backwards, and instead of progressing towar
... moreds Star Trek we backtracked to the late Victorian -- almost 1910/20s -- era. Very neat. It kept me guessing, but I liked that.Lucy Carlyle is a very realistic character, though I disliked how the author made Lucy go into a lot of detail about unimportant people. This was a bit much, although I did find it fun to rewrite the descriptions in my head using some of the terminology the author provided. (That was a fun writing exercise, though!) I don't think she required such a tragic backstory, but it seemed to work okay.Now... where do I begin about Anthony Lockwood? He was like Howl Jenkins (Howl's Moving Castle) and Sherlock (BBC Sherlock) wrapped up in one. Clever, quick-witted, utterly charming, and a born leader. What isn't there to love? From his first words, I found myself falling in love with Lockwood. He's perfect. Maybe too much so, but an instant hit for me. Personally, he's an excellent type of character if you can pull it off. And Stroud pulls it off with flying colors. Bravo! Encore!I liked all the paranormal jargon. Being a fan of the show Ghost Hunters and obsessed with ghost stories, I knew a lot. What I didn't know was explained to me through the text and in the handy glossary in the back. Ugh, I ADORE ghost stories and this one was really good. I felt because of Lucy's "over-explaining" nature, we lost a bit of the natural suspense that goes with clipped sentences. Didn't stop me reading, despite.Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The story was awesome. I loved how both the reader and Lockwood seemed to figure out the mystery before Lucy did. That kept me reading, hoping beyond hope that they would survive long enough to figure it out, too! The cliff-hanger ending was a little mean, however! I guess that's what keeps people clinging on as they wait for the sequel. I'm looking forward for the Whispering Skull to come in at the library! I am dying to read it! less
