review 1: Lovely artwork, wickedly funny story, all around good read.Luke Pearson's story Hilda and the Troll would have been something I would have loved as a child. It stars young Hilda, who enjoys camping in the rain, because nothing makes one feel cozier than knowing the damp and cold is only a thin sheet of canvas away. She and her animal companion spend the days wandering around doing sketches of rocks and pondering adventures with trolls, giants and other strange beings. When Hilda does encounter one, things don't turn out quite how she expected and she learns a valuable lesson, always read to the end. Which might be hard for her as she's quite the fidgit, ever ready to jump off her bed and race out into a rainy tent. The size of the graphic novel and the vibrant colors make... more it something readers will be fully enveloped in, all the backgrounds have extra elements to point out and no doubt re-reading it will give further and further fun!I would recommend this to anyone, it takes little time to read, but will be something to savor for a long time!
review 2: Ten Second Synopsis:Hilda goes out drawing and accidentally discovers a troll. Returning safely home, Hilda enjoys a quiet seat by the fire. Then the troll comes knocking.I am utterly charmed by this book and was both annoyed that it was so short, and gratified to know that there's a whole series awaiting me. The art is as enticing and jolly as a homespun Christmas jumper and I just love the mysterious woodman character (but why does he lie on the floor?) and the little reindeer dog guy. I bought this in paperback after succumbing to a long and drawn out battle with my inner-book-buying demons; I recommend that if you're going to buy it, get it in hardback because the paperback is as flimsy as a travel brochure and that is not a good thing when you wish to store it safely on your shelf for repeated readings. I suspect that now I've discovered the world of Hildafolk I'm going to send myself broke acquiring all the rest in the series.Recommended for anyone who loves a visual feast to accompany a mildly adventurous tale. less
