review 1: I asked my girlfriend to recommend two romance books for me to read so I could get an idea about the genre. This was the first book she recommended. It's well written with very enjoyable characters. For a romance book I was definitely expecting more sex. Since I was/am new to the genre I was mentally working with genre stereotypes as my expectations.There is sex but quite a bit more teasing happens (it's the first book in a series so not everyone hooks up right away)and I never felt that the story was moving towards sex just for the sake of sex.Every character felt like a real person that had goals and something to offer the story.
review 2: This book just fell flat for me. Issue #1: Their flirting always included the threat of death or torture. Sorry, but that... more is NOT a turn-on for me.Issue #2: I didn't feel any chemistry between them at all. It was all a matter of him having an interest in someone willing to talk back to him and her being obsessed with how pretty he is. Oh yeah, true love huh?Issue #3: She resists the seduction over and over and declares she will never submit then just suddenly changes her mind. Then all they do is talk dirty until they have sex, never mind that there is a psycho killer on the loose that they must find immediately.Issue #4: The whole killer plotline just seemed like a way to push them together. I never once felt any kind of reaction to it even when the gruesome crime scenes were being described. It seemed so paint by number: here a leg, there a torso, blood everywhere......whatever. Overall, I never really felt invested in the characters. Not enough backstory, not enough worldbuilding, not enough something. I say pass on this one. less
