review 1: At first I thought I'd inadvertently skipped Vol. 20 All Out War: Part One, and didn't even notice. But then reading other reviews suggests I was just so unimpressed, I forgot next to everything in it except for t̶h̶e̶ ̶G̶o̶v̶e̶r̶n̶o̶r̶ ̶2̶ Nagan's "we don't rape" line. Whatever. It feels like familiar territory to me, but at the end of the world, I imagine more than one little totalitarian city-state might pop up. Worse than the story feeling done before, is... everything else. Maggie is the only character I think has had any real emotional development in Kirkman's latest outings, but she gets the least amount of time on stage, always getting shoved to the back with a shout of "You're pregnant; get back!" I was going to go into more detail about the elements... more of plot and dialogue that are bothering me, but I think it'll suffice to say that having finished this arc, I think I'll just imagine that Carl comes back to do what he should have done, and all the characters live happily ever after in their cute little suburban enclaves... until Rick finally dies and Carl grows up to be a new Governor. Duh duh DUUUUUUUUUUN!
review 2: I loved this volume. I was entirely convinced that Rick was going to die for a couple pages which was sad (mostly just for Karl and Andrea), but actually kind of nice. Maggie's is shaping up to be the next reluctant leader, a role that suits her well. She was in danger of becoming boring without Glenn and with a baby on the way. Ok, let's get real. We're all just here to talk about Negan.Negan was hilarious and horrible as usual, though not half as clever. Blinded by arrogance and hatred, he saunters up to the gate, attacks and then sits around a campfire outside the walls. (Not smart and not (in this context) realistic--how were the dead not flocking to them all night? How many zombies could even realistically be left on the continent at this point? They've got to be running low, which would explain how the Saviors survived but when are they going to run out of dead entirely? Well, besides the odd suicide or person who dies while alone. But I digress.) The ending was shocking, I'll admit, but while Negan's change of heart was dramatic it was not out of character. The things Negan said, when Rick questioned him about why he was fighting, what the Saviors were fighting for, were true. He was trying to keep people safe, the best way he knew how: with violence and intimidation. If you'll think back to the early days of the series when there were more people, more unknowns and surviving from day to day (even on a good day) was a lot harder? That was how you had to be to survive the early days and Negan got it down. I think of Negan as a dog. A dog who's been through some tough sh*t. He used to have a family but now he lives on the streets and there's never enough food cause there's too many bigger, stronger dogs fighting for it. Gotta get tough. These days he's been messed with too many times. He bites first, protects his own. Then someone finds him from his old family, cleans him up, takes him home. He doesn't remember how to act for a while. He doesn't realize that he doesn't need to fight anymore that he doesn't need to be afraid. But soon enough he's licking your hand and sleeping in your bed. I'm kidding, don't let Negan sleep in your bed. Seriously, don't. But isn't it possible that he really truly saw the error of his ways? That someone who chose a path in times of horror and committed to it because it was the only plan they had, might come to recognize another way? I think so. Negan was a monster. He did horrible, unforgivable things for which he must be held accountable. But he did what he thought was right and when confronted with new evidence, he changed his mind. Negan has been a lot of things but illogical is not one of them. He was even reasonable in his own way. So was it out of character? No. Was letting him live a mistake? Hell yes.Why couldn't this have been the end? less

Much more exciting than the previous collections. The story actually moved foward for a change lol.

I'm a little disappointed with how things went down with Negan. I was expecting more.
