The Cynster Sisters Trilogy
review 1: In this second volume of the Cynster Sisters Trilogy, Eliza is kidnapped by the same Scottish Laird who took her sister in the first book. Luckily, she manages to catch the attention of Jeremy Chatling, who fans of Laurens may recognize from one of the Bastion Club novels -- he's the scholarly brother in the very first book of that series. Now he's 37, has "filled out" in the chest (Ahem -- every man I've met who has filled out in his thirties has done it in the gut, but who am I to judge?) and is ready to discover the unsuspected warrior locked within. This really wasn't a bad book. I'm being a little harsh in my rating -- it was a fun adventure with lots of chases through the wilds of Scotland. And I did kind of like to see Jeremy get a book; I kind of liked him from bef... moreore. The trouble is that I didn't really get to read about Jeremy at all. He "changed." For that matter, Eliza "changed." They both "changed" on this adventure and "neither one of them will ever be the same again." There were two main problems as I see it, both with the romantic plot:1. The author did not stay true to Jeremy's character. In every way, she did not give us a story of the scholarly Jeremy from the Bastion club novel having an adventure with Eliza Cynster, instead the author reinvented him to suit her typical warrior type -- even giving him a fuller chest! Seriously, it's okay to fall in love with a lanky man. Lankiness isn't even necessarily unattractive. But that's just a physical symptom of a bigger problem -- that from the start of his adventure Jeremy set aside all thoughts of ancient hieroglyphics and became something else entirely. It wasn't just a matter of him discovering another side of himself, the first side disappeared under the onslaught. Frankly, Eliza had met him before and had been turned off by both his physique and his scholarships. This might have been okay if she had come to appreciate this during their journey, but she never fell in love with the real him at all, only the newfound side to him that she never would have guessed was there. 2. Eliza (and to a lesser extent Jeremy) talked in riddles around one another about "obligations" and "expectations." They wanted to see what would happen to their relationship without all that hanging over their head ... or some nonsense like that. (I mean, they both knew exactly where this was leading. It was set in stone from the first night they spent alone together.) Some of their conversations were difficult to even parse, let alone understand. I'm still not sure I know what they were talking about or alluding to ... exploring what? Trying to decide what? The deed was done and they had the rest of their lives to fall in love with one another, or stubbornly choose not to. I'm not sure what was supposed to happen in a week of only knowing one another under extraordinary circumstances. They talked strange circles around one another even up to the end, when they went on one of the most painful quests for the three magic words I've ever run across, at least in part because they kept insisting that they "hadn't found the time to talk." What do you call five days alone on the road together? And a walk in the garden? And another night in bed together? Couldn't find a moment, really?
review 2: With status as New York best seller, I think this book is not disappointing. Setting in England and Scottland, the plot have a drama which up and down follow the contour of the hills. Although it is rather difficult to me, understanding more clearly about where and when and what kind of hills, woods, towns which mention in every chapter of this book, this book is still entertains me much if not full. Really a good book to buy ^-^ less

I liked the romance; it was sweet and felt real to me. But I am over the whole abduction thing.
