Inspector Erlendur
review 1: This mystery has the reader right beside the detective, such that the reader knows exactly the same as the she does. Erlendur was once again absent - odd, for a fictional police inspector, but in this book he was successfully replaced by his female detective, Elinborg. The mystery unravels bit by bit, and the ending - the solution - is entirely believable and fully satisfying. In fact, the reader is a couple of paragraphs ahead of Elinborg. I also enjoy the setting - this mystery takes place both in Reykjavik and in the hard to reach countryside. I found it somewhat amazing - but credible - that Icelandic police are able to delve into crimes so deeply. And as an additional interest - this book emphasized food more than the previous Indridason books I have read. Basi... morec Icelandic cooking sounded pretty awful, but Elinborg, as well as some of the minor characters, seem to be superb cooks. This emphasis on food reminds me of the Stieg Larsson books - possibly a Scandinavian thing?
review 2: Arnaldur Indriðason is one of my favorite Scandinavian crime thriller authors. His stories follow a brisk pace with more than enough detail to avoid seeming superficial or cliched. I can easily read one of his books in one sitting. Besides the psychological insights of Arnaldur Indriðason's books, I really enjoy the way he weaves the stark, austere beauty of the arctic Icelandic countryside into his novels, and particularly into his characters. The arctic wind, sleet and snow sweeping across the north Atlantic works like the ambient noise of a Kyoshi Kurosawa thriller. His books and characters mourn Iceland's the loss of history, of 'the old ways,' and in many ways, the depravity of Arnaldur Indriðason's characters exemplify what happens when we lose touch with our past, our history, our culture, the things that bind community. less

A good entry in the series that I often find to be just so-so.
