review 1: This continues the crime noir/Cthulhu mashup of the first, but it has much less of a horror focus. In some ways it seems to be an exploration of what makes the Femme Fatale character. Josephine has retreated from the world so her power over men no longer ensnares as many men, but even that doesn't do the trick, and another man gets enmeshed in her webs, due to the actions of another woman. The story doesn't feel as focused this time, although the interstitials from the present have a little more impact. There are still cults and powers and sacrifices, but they seem secondary to the character studies. And the fate of the leading man here is really weak. Foretold, but still weak. Still, the art and style and concept stand out as very original.

... moreve a hard time staying up-to-date on who's who and what's great in the wide world of comics, but I've learned to get excited when I see Ed Brubaker's name attached to a title. A gripping, noirish story - although I'd probably have followed it more easily if I'd read Vol. 1, an oversight which I shall hasten to correct. I also really like Sean Phillips's artwork. It's a little too dependent on photo reference for my taste, but his mastery of chiaroscuro brushwork bears comparison with Caniff and Bernet, which, in my book, is high praise indeed. less
