review 1: This book launches an "alternate history" series for middle school and junior high readers. The characters and dialogue are engaging. The writing and story are entertaining. It's fun to catch the obvious twists of history -- such as the protagonists attending a school named for Benedict Arnold.Speaking of the reference to Benedict Arnold, I found myself wondering how many readers of the intended audience actually have hooks for names such as Arnold, Alexander the Great, and Rasputin. I found myself thinking that perhaps I should read the Magic Attic (or Jack and Annie) books, if only to find out which names and events children are being acquainted with through popular story series books. This particular series hasn't seriously caught on in my community yet. I find this... more title worth talking up to young readers. In fact, I'm talking about it to adults as well.
review 2: While not entirely original in content or execution, nonetheless Dashner makes a decent start to this Scholastic series. Enough of the setting is established to set the foundation for what is to come here, which, unfortunately doesn't leave much room for starting the process of correcting the past in this book. My major complaint with it is that the "enemy organization" doesn't yet have a name only initials. less
